Good news for storage-strapped Android phone and tablet owners: The Amazon Video app finally supports expansion cards! Amazon Video is supported on both iOS and Android, though Amazon tends to be more Android-friendly and iOS-competitive than anything else. The company previously limited downloads to a phone’s internal storage and did not allow SD card downloads due to its own personal restrictions. Standard definition video features the same picture resolution as DVDs, and use MPEG digital stereo sound similar to CD quality. All Prime Video compatible devices support SD video playback. Note: At this time, Prime Video titles play in SD on most Android devices.

Amazon may like to deemphasize this fact, but the company's Kindle Fire tablets use a modified version of Android. Amazon is pretty familiar with Google's mobile operating system, so of course it offers users of all Android devices access to tens of thousands of videos with the Amazon Instant Video Android app. With wallet-friendly prices, a nice variety of programming, and years of steady improvements, Amazon's streaming service is finally on par with iTunes, Hulu, and Netflix, especially if you're an Amazon Prime subscriber. This free Android app is a great gateway to the streaming service.
Design/Interface
Amazon gives you plenty of ways to dive into its deep content pool of more than 100,000 television shows and movies. However, unlike its iOS counterpart, the Amazon Instant Video Android app puts an added hurdle between you and that content. Before you can download the app you must download Amazon's separate app store.
Amazon Instant Video isn't available on the standard Google Play store. Acquiring Amazon's app store requires loosening your security restrictions (which you should return to default as soon as you can). You can only get the Amazon Instant Video app through this new Amazon app store. It's a quick, but annoyingly unnecessary, extra step.
Similar to the Web version, which is just one part of the larger Amazon website, the Instant Video Android app actually connects to the larger Amazon Prime site. But while you can easily hop from watching shows and movies to shopping for tools and clothes, videos are still the focus. Instead of being cluttered with links, the interface is nothing but a grid of big, conspicuous boxes highlighting each movie or TV show. It looks great on tablets, and on smartphones like the Moto X we used for testing, the menu is efficient enough to make up for the reduced real estate.

You search for programming by keying a title into the search box, or use product categories that let you view movies and TV shows based on genre, release date, channel, and more. Tapping a movie or TV show link displays a window showing the user rating, runtime, release date, and other pertinent information. If you're on a TV show page, you can click the Preview button to watch a snippet; movie pages let you watch a trailer.
The Amazon Instant Video Experience
Individual standard-definition TV episodes are available for 99 cents (Bones, Glee), $1.99 (House, The Walking Dead), and sometimes as high as $2.99 each. You can find high-definition episodes of the same shows (when available) in the same price range, but we found many HD versions cost a bit more (generally $1) than their SD counterparts.
Amazon lets you purchase entire seasons (The Legend of Korra Season 4 HD, for example, is a reasonable $29.99) or a TV Pass. TV Passes grant access to current TV seasons with videos posting shortly after they've aired live—often at a discounted price. Hannibal Season 3, for example, can be purchased starting at $1.99 per episode, but with a TV pass, you can purchase the entire season for $22.99 ($1.77 per episode). Unfortunately, whether you use the app or the website, not all shows in the catalog have a TV Pass, and the TV pass is only valid for the current television season. You could just wait and buy the season once it's complete (older seasons are often discounted even more) but keeping up with the conversation around a show is part of the fun.
Subscribing to Amazon Prime ($99 a year) gets Instant Video customers an extra feature: More than 40,000 commercial-free streaming videos at no additional cost. These videos include selections from HBO like Veep and The Wire, plenty of cartoons for the kids, and Amazon's growing library of promising original content such as the Golden Globe award-winning series Transparent. While prices for buying or renting videos were similar to what we saw on the other big Android video provider, the Google Play store, there are enough videos free with Prime that you won't be straight up buying content nearly as often.
In terms of sheer numbers, Amazon Instant Video boasts the deepest collection of movies and television shows. However, most of those videos need to be purchased regardless of whether or not you're an Amazon Prime subscriber. Rivals like Hulu and our Editors' Choice Netflix offer considerable libraries for a monthly subscription fee. Hulu especially has a massive collection of current TV shows available to watch, and on Android some of them are even free for non-subscribers. While an Amazon Prime subscription gets you much more than just a video streaming service (faster Amazon shipping options are pretty nice), its annual fee is the most expensive of all three. Per month you're spending $8.25, which is comparable to competitors' prices, but again that's before you factor in the money you'll likely be spending on content that's not free with Prime.
Streaming HD video looks spectacular on Amazon and now dominates the service. That's an excellent improvement, given that a few years ago HD videos were few and far between. Initially the Android app didn't even support HD video, but now as long as your device can handle it you can enjoy videos in glorious 1080p. If your Internet connection or 4G LTE signal is less stable, or if you just opt for the cheaper videos, the Standard definition streaming video quality is what you'd expect; passable when viewed on a relatively small screen smartphone screen, and problematic on a larger tablet screen.
If you don't want to leave your viewing experience to chance, you can download videos for offline viewing in the highest quality. Pausing a movie or show will also display behind-the-scenes information from IMDB, a cute gimmick but not a huge plus.
Viewing Limitations
There is a dark side, however. Some movies that are freshly released to the home market are unavailable for viewing or downloading for an unspecified period of time due to licensing restrictions. This isn't an Amazon-specific problem; it applies to pretty much all video-on-demand services. Fortunately, you're notified of such before Amazon completes your order. And unlike the iOS Amazon app, which forces you to make purchases in a separate browser, Amazon Instant Video on Android makes buying new shows and movies right on your device as quick and easy as streaming free Prime content.
Should You Tune Into Amazon Instant Video?
If you're an Amazon heavyweight, this is the video service for you, especially if you're a Prime subscriber who can enjoy the ad-free streaming and fast access to current shows and movies. The monthly subscription of other services, like our Editors' Choice Netflix, is nice, but when you're looking for that specific movie or show, and are willing to buy or rent it directly, Amazon Instant Video is your best—and sometimes your only—choice. Installation issues aside, this very good Android app will only further encourage you to stay inside the Amazon video ecosystem. Amazon Instant Video (for Android)
Bottom Line: If you're looking to stream video on your Android device anytime and anywhere, Amazon Instant Video offers reasonable prices and a wide variety of programming, especially if you're a Prime member.
